A great country pub...

The Rusty Gun is a great country pub in St Ippolyts, Hitchin. We work hard to combine three very important elements to make your experience indisputably enjoyable. Our local beers from The Old Cannon Brewery, a selection of superb wines from The Burch family and an unrelenting passion for providing outstanding food in a warm & cosy atmosphere.

Feel free just to come and have a drink and a look. We promise you’ll be tempted to eat with us next time!

The Twin Foxes - Infamous Poachers!

The Rusty Gun is so named after two 12 bore shot guns were found and placed over the fireplace. The guns belonged to the notorious ‘Twin Foxes’ – Albert Ebenezer and Ebenezer Albert Fox who were identical twins. They were infamous poachers who lived in the area in the 1800s.

The full story of these guns and their owners is to be found in the pub by the fireplace.

Beautiful Pub Garden

The garden has always been an important part of the Rusty Gun and is a great place for relaxation with its chance for all to feed the piglets, its fire pit and its fish pond.

18th Century Building

The original building that is the heart of the Rusty gun is 18th century and was probably a blacksmiths home and forge feeding from the toll road that passed between Welwyn and Hitchin for travellers passing North or South from or to London.

Supporting weary travellers

It became a petrol garage in the 1930’s and a food led pub in the 1980’s. It has clearly always existed to support weary travellers. The business still offers refreshment and pleasure for all ages with unique elements; a farm shop, its own piglets and a covered fire pit for the winter and chillier summer days.
